Staff of the Pirates' Log won five awards Saturday, Nov.7, at the annual conference of the Journalism Association of Community Colleges Norcal Division, including a top prize for "Tweeting the Conference" via Twitter, by Paul Guererro. This was the first time this category of prize was offered by the JACC/Norcal.
MJC students also won prizes in the mail-in competition for journalism published in Spring 2009: First Place for Opinion Writing (Zack Sherzad who graduated Spring 2009); 3rd Place in Feature Photo for Rena Flores, last year's Pirates' Log Photo Editor; and Honorable Mentions for the team of Jodi Dumlao, Alyssa Hawkinson and Nathan Norbeck for their full-page photo essay on the Amgen bicycle races in Modesto last February.
Alyssa Hawkinson, who was not a Pirates' Log staff member but contributed to the paper as student in Al Golub's PhotoJournalism class, also won an Honorable Mention for a Sports Action Photo.
The JACC is a non-profit journalism statewide organization providing extended educational opportunities for students of journalism and continuing education for journalism professors.
