Modesto Junior College's chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society will host a 2009-10 Honors Seminar Series of DVD lectures entitled “The Paradox of Affluence:  Choices, Challenges and Consequences”  featuring nationally renowned speakers. The first lecture will feature journalist and former National Public Radio’s Talk of the Nation host Ray Suarez, presented this Friday, November 20, 5 – 7 p.m. in Forum 101 on MJC’s East Campus, 435 College Avenue.  A moderated question-and-answer period will follow each seminar.  The series is free and open to the public.

Suarez will speak on “If You're So Rich, How Come You're Not Happier?  America's Difficult Relationship with Class, Material Success and the Pursuit of Happiness.”  He will examine what wealth and happiness mean to us in America.  In this discussion Suarez lays out a series of propositions about the social impact of affluence for good or ill, and then follows up with specific examples of the unintended consequences of affluency for the wealthy and the less wealthy.  He begins his “tour” of modern affluence in the U.S. in the last half century and then broadens the conversation to the implications of American wealth in an increasingly multi-polar economic system with new middle classes springing up worldwide.

PTK will present two more DVD seminars on The Paradox of Affluence in the spring semester and those lectures will feature Jessica Jackley, co-founder of Kiva, the revolutionary micro-lending website, and Ralph Nader, consumer advocate for issues related to product safety, the environment, clean water and health.  PTK invites interested community members to join them for this thought-provoking series.  More information on the speakers is available online at www.ptk.org/honorsseminars.  For additional information about MJC’s Beta Mu Theta Chapter of PTK contact the faculty advisors Judy Cain at cainj@mjc.edu or Erik Armstrong at armstronge@mjc.edu.
