The Nov. 3rd election results are in and MJC alumnus Dave Geer has prevailed in the District 2 race. Geer was running up against another MJC alumnus, Al Nava. As of today, the count was 389 votes for Geer and 313 votes for Al Nava.

This was the very first City Council election in Modesto that was voted by regional districts. This new way of voting for City Council resulted from the passage of Measure N in February 2008. And although District 2 residents were instrumental in putting Measure N on the ballot and passing it, only 702 residents living there voted.

The District 2 race reflected the ideological and generational differences between Geer and Nava .

Geer describes himself as a small ‘r’ republican. He received strong support among conservative Republicans and the business community, as well as from the law enforcement community. Geer raked in $15,638, $2,000 of which came from the Modesto Chamber of Commerce. Geer has a Facebook page, but focused more on traditional campaigning like sending out mailers.

Nava, a progressive Democrat, was supported by retired MJC professor, Dan Onorato, and several Modesto residents. He is an outspoken proponent for the legalization of marijuana and has been very active on Facebook.

Dave Geer has been a long-time resident of District 2 and says that he understands the problems facing his neighbors. One of Geer’s campaign promises for his four-year term was to fight for the re-opening of a police substation on Paradise Road that was shut down.
