Three staff members of the Pirates' Log, the student newspaper of Modesto Junior College, and a contributing student cartoonist, were honored at the annual convention of the Journalism Association of Community Colleges  April 7-9 in Sacramento.  The awards were for work done by the paper in the Fall 2010 semester, competing against California community colleges with journalism programs that are members of the JACC.

Holly Reid won a Second Place Award for her editorial cartoon depicting drivers seeking parking spots in the MJC lot as sharks circling the waters.

Editor-in-Chief Paul Guerrero and Matt Johnson, Video Editor, won an Honorable Mention for a series of web news broadcasts, posted on the Log's online edition.

Dani Porter, then in her third semester as a Pirates' Log staffer, earned an Honorable Mention for her poignant columns in which she detailed the effects of growing up with an alcoholic father, struggles with food addiction, and watching the incursions of Alzheimer's disease on her grandmother's personality.

The Pirates' Log hopes to submit its best work from the current semester to the Fall 2011 (Nor Cal) conference of the JACC, even though the MJC program is slated for discontinuance.
