Issue date: 4/19/07 Section: Entertainment
For many people "Star Wars" is not only a movie, but a cosmic event, a cause, a way of life, a reason to believe. George Lucas' now iconic film inspires every kind of interpretation, but residents of Modesto see Lucas most of all as the epitome of the "local boy" who made good.
On June 2, Modesto Junior College will honor the 30th anniversary of the release of "Star Wars" while giving exposure to the work of current and former MJC film students. The event will also provide an opportunity to celebrate the new MJC Center for Media and Performing Arts that is scheduled to open in 2008. The event will coincide with the Celebration of the Humanities art show now on display in the Art Gallery on East Campus.
The day-long event will be held in the Mary Stuart Rogers Student Learning Center on West Campus. Admission is free. Events will include games and lectures, and promotion of 'all things Lucas.'
Confirmed speakers will include Peter Kramer, a lecturer in Film Studies at the University of East Anglia, Great Britain and author of The New Hollywood: From Bonnie and Clyde to Star Wars, and
Patti McCarthy, a Lucas scholar and fan. She wrote The Lucas Effect: George Lucas and the New Hollywood for her dissertation while attending the University of Southern California. Dr. McCarthy currently teaches film and English courses at the University of the Pacific, Stockton.
Lucas' student films and the first Star Wars will be shown as well as educational presentations chronicling his life and work.
The 501st Legion of Stormtroopers/Modesto Squad will be on hand to meet the public and sign autographs. There will be exhibits of Star wars memorabilia and a sale of books, CDs, and DVDs .
The event is also a chance for students to show off their work in the film arts and to be exposed to the possibilities of jobs in the media.
For further information, contact MJC film professor Carol Lancaster-Mingus at 575-6078 or adjunct professor Ken White, at 576-0600.
