As of Thursday, March 22, the Modesto Junior College baseball team find themselves in the middle of a heated race for the Central Valley Conference race.
This should be nothing new to the Pirate's (15-11 overall, 7-4 CVC). For the past few years, MJC has battled from start to finish with conference rivals such as the Fresno City Rams and the Merced College Blue Devils. This season is no different, as Modesto trails Fresno (19-4, 10-1 CVC) by three games, and Merced (15-8, 8-3 CVC) by one game.
After a complete game shutout against Merced courtesy of Micah Spencer's right arm, the Pirates suddenly dropped their next two games against West Hills and Fresno.
Although they suffered a setback in the standings, Modesto's offense came alive once again in a 15-3 pounding against Porterville to gain some momentum back before the stretch run.
On Tuesday, March 13, West Hills (13-7, 6-5 CVC) handed the Pirates a discomforting 10-5 loss. Two days later, on Thursday, March 15, Modesto hosted Fresno City for the first time this year. Earlier in CVC play, the Rams defeated Modesto 7-6 in Fresno.
Right-handed flame thrower Brodie Downs took the mound for the Pirates in hopes of avenging the February 27 loss. However, when the final out was recorded, Modesto was sent home with a frustrating 1-0 loss. The powerful offense of the past was unable to score a run for the first time in conference play.
Despite their second loss to Fresno, MJC is still hunting for the conference crown and another Northern California playoff berth.
On Tuesday, March 20, rain resulted in a postponement of the MJC vs. Reedley College game. Modesto will next hit the road at College of Sequoias on Thursday, March 22, and at Taft on Saturday, March 24, before returning home against Porterville on Tuesday, March 27.
