The 2006 fall sports season is finally underway, and many Modesto Junior College teams are enjoying early season success.

In the water, the women's water polo team took part in the Cuesta Invitational on September 8 and 9, 2006. After winning their first game 13-1, the new look Pirates faltered against Cerritos Junior College 9-4. Lauren Griffin and Collette Lash each tallied two goals while goalie Tracee Zaiger had 10 saves.

In the third place game, Modesto took the pool with Santa Ana Junior College for what would be an exciting game. In the end, freshmen Kelli Sargent and Michaela Solario, both Johansen protégés, lead the way for the Pirates with a combined nine goals, a 13-12 victory, and a 2-1 record in the tournament. Zaiger finished the tournament with 26 saves.

On Tuesday, September 12, 2006, Modesto trekked south to do some damage in the Merced College Mini Tournament. In the first game, the Pirates handed West Valley Junior College a 17-9 defeat. In the win, Modesto had five players score three goals or more. Lauren Griffin led the way with five of her own goals, and Tracee Zaiger continued her dominance at goalkeeper with seven saves for the Pirates. In their second game of the tournament, Modesto trampled Ohlone College 17-4. The women's defense was incredible: Zaiger recorded an astounding 14 saves in the win.

On the men's side of the pool, Daniel Hunt led the Pirates with four goals in a win over Merced Junior College in the West Valley Tournament on Saturday, September 9. However, in the next game, Modesto wasn't as successful, losing a heartbreaker 6-3 to Santa Rosa Junior College.

The men's and women's soccer teams have also had their share of pre-season action. The Lady Pirates are coming off a stellar 2005 season in which they advanced to the Final Four in the Northern California playoffs. Entering the 2006 season, newcomer Vanessa Stanfield (Johansen 2006) leads a young but promising group of talent that currently ranks #11 in the country. Stanfield is a powerful and aggressive player who can score from point blank range. She displayed her offensive talent in the Evergreen Fall Tournament on Saturday, September 2. In a 4-0 victory over Shasta Junior College, "Vee" tallied two goals, and in a 9-0 triumph over the host Evergreen College, she recorded four goals for the hat trick.
