Men's Tennis sweep Sac City 9-0; defeat Fresno City for first time since 2000

On Thursday, March 16 the Modesto Junior College Men's and Women's tennis teams squared off against Sacramento City Junior College at the MJC tennis courts.

In the end, both teams had successful victories, as the men swept Sac City 9-0, and the women prevailed 6-3.

On the men's side, Jay White of MJC manhandled Aaron Dunbar 6-1, 6-2 in the number one singles match.

In other singles matches, Grant Tower, Mike Blaine, Reyes Rodriguez, Jian Salcedo, and Josh VanderVeen, all of MJC, dominated their opponent.

In the doubles matches, White and Tower, the Pirate's "One-Two Combo", shut down Sacramento City's one and two doubles players with a score of 6-1, 6-4.

Blaine and Salcedo routed David Lau and Aaron Dunbar 6-1, 6-2, and Rodriguez and VanderVeen put away Garret Buckley and Andy Liang 6-1, 6-4.

On the women's side, MJC's number one singles player, Rebecca Jacobs, won her match against Sacramento City's number one player 6-3, 6-0.

The Pirate's number two single's player Amanda Guajardo lost a heartbreaking match 0-6, 6-4, 6-1. Denholm defeated Dewey in a close match 7-6 (7-5) 6-0, and Muller had no problem with Sac City's Gorbini by winning 6-0, 6-2. Modesto's only other single's loss was Sam Viera's meltdown against Sac City's Stassi 6-2, 6-4.

Rushing of Modesto rounded out singles matches with a solid win over Laws 6-4, 6-2.

In doubles matches, Jacobs and Guajardo teamed together to take down Sacramento City's one-two punch Valle and Laws 6-1, 7-5. Modesto's Denholm and Muller squeezed by Gorbini and Dewey 6-4, 6-4, but Viera and Rushing of MJC were edged by Sacramento City's Tuck and Stassi 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

On Tuesday, March 21, the Pirate's men's squad traveled to Fresno to take on the Rams in a battle for first place in the Central California Conference.

Entering the match, MJC had not beaten Fresno City since the year 2000, six years ago. In the end, Modesto earned a triumphant victory of their rival with a score of 6-3. MJC's Blaine and Rodriguez captured No. 3 and No. 4 singles match victories in the historic day.

Modesto's next home match is on Tuesday, March 28 against Consumnes River Junior College at 1:00 p.m.
