The Modesto Junior College Women's Team ran impressively winning their Nor-Cal Rotational Meet and beating Sacramento City College, who has won the state championship three times in a row from 2003-2005.
"Sacramento City College runs a quality program and anytime you finish ahead of them, it's a great day," Head coach Mary Shea said.
Savannah Anderson, coming from Modesto High School, won the 100m (12.62) and the 200m (25.38) and was on the winning 4 x 100m winning relay team. Her 200m time puts her second in Nor-Cal. Ashley Taylor (Beyer HS) also had a great day winning the 400m in a nor-Cal leading time of 59.14 and was runner-up to Savannah in the 200m (25.74). Ashley was also on the winning 4 x 100m relay (49.29) and the 4 x 400m relay (4:07.05).
Natalie Alvarez was victorious in the 5000m running by herself the whole way in 20:11.
The field event threesome of Lisa Adams, Jamie Landry and Amy Bixel were also victorious in their respective events. Lisa Adams, high jump, 4'10", Jamie Landry, pole vault, 10"0" and Amy Bixel in the hammer, 123'5". All three women qualified for the state championships last year and are greatly contributing this year.
The MJC Men and Women's Track and Field Team had a great showing at The Beaver Relays breaking the MJC 4 x 200m Relay record.
Just a two year-old record, the team of LaBritt Whitehead, Ashley Taylor, Naomi Spruell and Savannah Anderson ran 1:44.41 to break the old record set in 2004 by Niki Avery, Cheree Stanfield, Antonia Vega and Delores Vaughn. (1:44.54)
The impressive point about this record is that the women ran virtually by themselves with Hartnell College nine seconds behind and the team is all freshman.
Other highlights included a win by the 4 x 100m Relay. The team of Whitehead, Taylor, Danielle Goynes and Anderson ran 49.21 to San Francisco's 50.41. The women's sprint medley lost a close one (by .67 seconds) to San Francisco.
John Tews of MJC placed first in the 10000 Meter Run with a time of 36:07:90. Another Pirate, Ryan Caris, finished second in the Men's 110 Meter Hurdles. In the Men's 400 Meter Relay, MJC placed third with a score of 42.07.
MJC took first place in Men's 1600 Spring Medley with a time of 3:35.94. Brandon Crawford finished fourth in Men's 100 Meter Dash with a score of 11.57.
Jodie Leal received the baton in third place and ran her 800m leg very intelligently to slowly made up the ground on the anchor from San Francisco.
The last 100 meters was a footrace as the two battled down the straight-a-away with Jodie finishing barely in second place.
The team of Tiffany Fisher, Danielle Goynes, Amanda Tracey and Leal ran 4:22.87 behind San Francisco's 4:22.20. Another freshman, Natalia Johnson (Pittman HS) took the open 100m race in a windy 13.96.
The Men's and Women's teams host The First Annual Jack Albiani Invitational next Friday, March 10. Field events begin at 2:30pm and running events start at 3:00pm.
