The Modesto Junior College Women's basketball team clinched a playoff berth with a win over Porterville Junior College 76-54 on Wednesday, Feb. 15.
In the win, freshman standout Krystle Brown dropped 16 points, and sophomore sensation Diana Felix racked 11 points. After the win, the Pirate's became the fourth team from the Central Valley Conference to advance to the Northern California playoffs with 20 or more wins.
In the previous three games, the Pirate's had struggled in losses to Reedley Junior College and Fresno City Junior College. On Feb. 8, Modesto lost a hard fought game against Reedley 72-57, and on Saturday, Feb. 11, the Pirates were handed their third consecutive loss to the hands of Fresno City 68-59.
In the win over Porterville, MJC regained their team chemistry, and continued their quest toward the playoffs. In the final game of the season, on Saturday, Feb. 18, the Pirate's hosted Taft Junior College (16-14). Throughout the entire game, both teams battled for loose balls, offensive rebounds, and second efforts.
At halftime, MJC was down 39-30, and was on the verge of closing out the regular season with a loss at home against a weaker opponent. However, in the second half, the Pirate's turned their games up to another level, and showed the crowd why they're a legitimate playoff contender. The comeback started at the expense of Diana Felix's aggressive style of play, and Kelly Cole's inside presence.
In the end, MJC came together and looked like the team that started the 2005-2006 season with a 8-1 record. Felix finished the game with a 33 hard earned points and 9 rebounds, and Cole added 24 points and 14 rebounds in the win. Five Taft players eventually fouled out of the game in their attempts to stop the dynamic duo of Felix and Cole.
After closing out Central Valley Conference play with a 7-5 record and a 22-10 overall record, the Pirate's are surging toward the playoffs with extreme confidence. On Saturday, Feb. 25, MJC travels to north to Rocklin to take on the No. 6 seed Sierra Junior College.
The No. 11 seed MJC Pirate's are the state's biggest surprise team because last year the totaled 2 wins. This year, they finished with 22 wins, a 20 game difference, and nine of their ten losses were to the hands of 20-win teams. The Pirate's will have their hands full in the first round game against a team that cruised past them at the Monterey Tournament in December 76-50. Nevertheless, Modesto had one of the most successful seasons in MJC women's basketball history, and they have a load of freshman returning next fall.
