Onlive gaming system, a new world of entertainment

Imagine a world of endless downloading, not just small music files but of major game titles, loaded with gigabytes of data and animations, streamed seamlessly from a small box, no bigger than a home phone, directly to your TV. This will soon be a reality with the OnLive gaming system, a system which uses an amazing innovation that has been around for some time but until now has not really been utilized to its full potential.

Modesto unemployment rates decreasing at a snail speed

Looking for work? Many Modestans are trying tirelessly to find employment within the area without any luck. As of May 2010, Modesto was named the 15th out of 20 in the most unemployed cities in America, according to businessinsider.com. The number of people unemployed in Modesto peaked in March 2010 at 45,965, but fell 1.1% in August to 16.4%, which isn't nearly low enough for those still struggling with unemployment.

Margaret Mead once said, "Never doubt that a small, group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.'' The group of students who marched on March 22 in protest of the state's education budget cuts was anything but small.

Former MJC president dies of cancer

 Former Modesto Junior College president Dr. Richard Rose died this morning at 9:35 a.m. Cause and location of death has yet to be revealed.
     According to a mass email sent out to faculty Monday, March 8, Rose informed those close to him that he was terminally ill. No further information was given. Some MJC faculty sent out their thoughts and memories of Rose.

Sarah Palin to join FOX News

      Former Governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, was hired on Fox News as a "contributor". Palin will not have her own program, but she will be appearing on the networks program on a regular basis giving political commentary and analysis. Palin will also have statements posted on the Fox web site, the business cable channel, and the Fox Radio Network. Fox has not said when Palin will start, nor her salary, all is known is its a multiyear contract and she will be occasionally hosting episodes of a new series featuring true inspirational stories about Americans who have overcome diversity called "Real American Stories."

MID raises rates

     Modesto Irrigation District, (MID), Board members voted to increase electricity rates by 7 percent on January 26. Much lower than the proposed 11 percent increase that would be needed to raise revenue to a level the public utility's lenders would like to see in order to continue receiving low interest rates on bonds issued for expansion projects. Beginning in February, residential bills should expect to increase an average of $9 per month while businesses would increase an average of $15. The Board is also expecting to vote on whether surcharges should be used to make up the difference if these revenue goals are not met.

     Modesto Junior College has been successful this semester in transferring 146 students in CSU and UCs this fall, but many challenges and obstacles are yet to come for them.  Students who are transferring next semester or plan to transfer next semester prepare yourselves, it will only get worse.

Bette Belle Smith, a Modesto Junior College alumnus known by many as "Mrs. Modesto" for her extensive involvement in the Modesto community, died November 29, 2009 at age 88. Her memorial service was scheduled for Tuesday, December 8 at the Gallo Center for the Arts in downtown Modesto.

Rose departure a mystery

Modesto Junior College wants answers

     As of December 1, 2009, Dr. Richard Rose stepped down as the president of Modesto Junior College. Students and some faculty members describe Rose's departure as a mystery and many want answers. It is unlikely that the college will get them.   The questions that have engaged the campus are whether YCCD will let the college know why Dr. Rose was let go two weeks before the end of the semester and how their decision benefits the campus. However, since Dr. Rose and the district came to a mutual agreement of silence, we may never know.

Modesto Teacher Officially Charged on Two Counts of Molestation

Stanislaus County district attorney's office officially has officially filed charges against former Modesto Junior College criminal justice instructor Frank Drummond, 42, of two felony counts of lewd and lascivious acts with two friends of his daughters, ages 13 and 15. Prosecutors believe that the two girls were molested separately on August 9 and 20, respectively.

Thanksgiving; the last Thursday in November, when you and your family sit around and watch the Macy's thanksgiving day parade that's on two NBC and CBS,  while your cousin complains "The Packers are playing, turn it on FOX!" only to see that they are playing the lions and the score is 27-7 at halftime.

NPR radio host to speak at Honor Society seminar on "The Paradox of Affluence"

Modesto Junior College's chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society will host a 2009-10 Honors Seminar Series of DVD lectures entitled "The Paradox of Affluence:  Choices, Challenges and Consequences"  featuring nationally renowned speakers. The first lecture will feature journalist and former National Public Radio's Talk of the Nation host Ray Suarez, presented this Friday, November 20, 5 – 7 p.m. in Forum 101 on MJC's East Campus, 435 College Avenue.

     With H1N1, more commonly known as Swine flu, still a present concern to our health, many Modesto Junior College students are probably wondering when the vaccine will be available to them. Unfortunately, they'll have to wait at least awhile longer. Due to the high demand, Stanislaus County hasn't even received the vaccine yet, and neither have the schools.

MJC Student Places Top 10 in Swine Flu Contest

A Modesto Junior College student, Daniel Natzke, 18, is a finalist in the California H1N1 video competition issued by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.      The competition had asked for students to create a 15, 30 or 60 second clip that promotes methods to prevent the spread of the H1N1 Virus.

Candidates vie for spot on Modesto city school board

The Consolidated District Election to be held Tuesday, November 3

Tuesday, November third brings forth the election for Modesto City School Board of Education. Four seats on the board are up for grabs and five new applicants are challenging the four existing members who are running for re-election, nine candidates total. All of those registered are encouraged to turn out and vote, this being a crucial time to make decisions for our city's schools. The board is complied for seven members who serve for four years at a time. Modesto City Schools is Stanislaus County's largest district with 28,000 students; the trustees have their work cut out for them.

California State Universities Students Take Action

First in series on the impact of the budget crisis on higher education

       California State University and the University of California have suffered a triple whammy this year from budget cuts, student protests and massive layoffs these past few months. The budget deficits handed down from Sacramento have forced universities to cut back on academic programs and temporarily denied entrance to new students.

Two MJC Alumni contend to represent Modesto's District 2

  The November 3 Modesto City Council race is heating up, and two Modesto Junior College alumni are vying for the District 2 seat. Dave Geer, an Army and National Guard veteran and federal security police officer at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, is running against Al Nava, a Navy veteran and Regional Fitness Ambassador for the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

T'ai Chi

On Monday October 12, a group of about 10 members of Modesto Junior College staff gathered together for a free session of T'ai Chi exercises with instructor Naser Ataee. Ataee specializes in T'ai Chi of Master Tung Kai Ying. This special technique involves slow and relaxing movements, aimed to relieve the tension of everyday stress.
