Sparks flew over Modesto Junior College’s Pirate’s Stadium as Bryan, from CADAR Electric, cut through the 80 year old steal of the stadium lights on January 29. Although these lights had been up for eight decades, Bryan said, “It isn’t too bad up there. I’m used to working on high rises in San Francisco.” The steal holding up the giant lights had weathered quite nicely, to many peoples’ surprise.
These lights had been providing light to the Pirate’s stadium since the early 1930s. They have lit events such as Pirate’s home games, the Special Olympics, International track and field events, and at one point even hosted a traveling circus.
Doug Yocum,a grounds keeper for MJC said, “I knew a guy, who was a kid, would sneak up the middle tower along Tully(road) and watch the circus form the platform.” These lights have not only provided the evident light to Pirate’s Stadium, but have also brought joy to the community throughout the past 80 years.
Many people are eager for the lighting renovation to be completed. The stadium, which was once lit by six lights, will now be lit by four better illuminating, more energy efficient lights.
Bart Ahyou from The Modesto Bee said that for years the Pirate’s Stadium has been known as “the worst field” in terms of lighting. The new lighting has photographers excited because they will now get crisper images. Environmentalists are also extremely excited for MJC’s lighting renovations that will conserve energy and demonstrate their conservation efforts. Athletes and those who fill the stands are also very excited for this new renovation.
