With almost as much anticipation as they have about the finale of "American Idol," the students of Modesto Junior College are waiting to see who will serve as the next MJC president.
The three finalists were chosen by a committee chaired by YCCD Chancellor Dr. Roe Darnell which consisted of faculty members from MJC, as well as the ASMJC Student President, Yashlee Nazi. The search began in December 2009 and resulted in 39 applications, 24 from California, according to an earlier Pirates’ Log article. All three finalists are from California and have vice presidential experience.
Dr. Gaither Loewenstein (Vice President, Educational Services, Norco College, Norco, CA) has a doctorate in urban affairs from the University of Delaware, Newark, DE, a master’s in urban affairs from Wichita State University, KS, and a bachelor’s degree in public administration from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA.
Kimberly Perry (Vice President, Academic Affairs, Los Angeles City College, Los Angeles, CA) has an Ed.D. in higher educational administration and leadership from the University of the Pacific, Stockton, CA, a master’s in education from the University of California, Davis, CA and a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education from UC Davis.
Dr. Mark J. Zacovic (Interim Vice President for Administrative Services, Pasadena Area Community College District, Pasadena, CA) has a doctorate in educational leadership (higher education emphasis) from the University of Nevada, Reno, an MBA in administrative management, Whittier College, CA and a bachelor’s in sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Open forums for the finalists were scheduled for March 1-3 at each of the two MJC campuses and were open to the public. Each finalist was given an opportunity to discuss their preparation for the position, as well as their education and leadership philosophy and concluded with a time to respond to questions from the forum attendees. Attendees were given the opportunity to complete a comment card and have it sent to the Yosemite Community College Board of Trustees for consideration and to aid their decision while choosing the new president.
