He didn’t win an Oscar, but he still won the heart of Modesto Junior College.
MJC announced on March 10 that its 2010 Distinguished Alumnus Award would go to Jeremy Renner as this year’s honoree.
The Distinguished Alumnus Award tradition began in 1967. It recognizes the achievements of past alumni and represents hope for graduating students as they head off to pursue their dreams. Past honorees include Bette Belle Smith, Steve Collins, George Lucas, Jeff Moorad and many more.
Award honorees are asked to participate in the commencement ceremony and deliver a personal message to the graduating class. Renner’s name will also be added to the plaque on display in Founder’s Hall.
Renner discovered his passion for acting when he took an acting class as an elective at MJC. His first performance on stage was in the school’s production of “The Wizard of Oz” where he played the scarecrow. After leaving MJC, Renner journeyed to the Hollywood Hills and eventually was cast in movies such as “S.W.A.T.,” “Dahmer,” and Oscar-winning 2009 war film, “The Hurt Locker.”
Renner has been in Modesto’s spotlight since the Oscar nominations were announced in January. Although Renner didn’t win for Best Actor, “The Hurt Locker” (the film in which he was nominated) won Oscars in six of nine categories, including the award for Best Picture of the Year.
MJC’s 2010 Commencement Ceremony is on April 30 at the MJC East Campus. Students and staff will hope to see and hear from Renner at the ceremony.
