Daniel Natzke, 18, a student at Modesto Junior College, placed among four finalists in the California Department of Public Health’s Flu Film Festival. The statewide contest was announced last semester, and its purpose was to raise awareness of the importance of preventing the spread of the H1N1 flu virus. The gold award went to Walnut Elementary School for their ‘H1N1 PSA’ video. Three other videos were awarded the silver award; among those was Natzke’s video ‘H1N1 PSA: featuring the Third Little Pig.’ In Natzke’s piece, created by a technique known as stop animation which utilizes clay figures that are manipulated by hand as they are filmed frame by frame, one of the three pigs talks about how the Big Bad Wolf didn’t get him because he got the flu.
A press conference was held in Sacramento towards the end of December to announce the winner of the contest. All four videos are airing on television as result for placing. Natzke, a talented young film maker, plans to finish up his general education at MJC, while he continues to make films.
“I wanted to learn all aspects of film and I would rather work with the regular movie process over animation,” he says.
Natzke has been in love with the art of film making ever since he was 11 years old and wishes to pursue film as a career. After he is done with MJC he aspires to transfer to UCLA or USC.
His advice to up and coming hopefuls is based on his own experience.
“Keep at what you are doing; do not compromise; tell a good story and make movies with your heart.”
