Students returning to classes after the winter break will witness the beginning of massive physical changes coming to both the East and West campuses as the college continues to put its Measure E –secured funds to work. Further construction and renovation projects will disrupt normal traffic and activity patterns starting in the summer and fall of 2010. The photo illustration, above, lays out some of the dislocations that will occur as a result of this slow-motion, giant chess game as campus personnel and students move around and trade places, just ahead of the construction crews.
Construction will begin in January on the new Student Services Building between the Science and Morris buildings. Most significantly, Founders Hall will shut down entirely this summer for renovations, and the classes and activities that take place there will be moved to other buildings including temporary portables to be set up in the south parking lot, next to the MJC Stadium. And should you be looking for the offices of the Pirates’ Log, you will find it squeezed into the utility room known as Art 105, where the Arts Division camped out during the two-year Auditorium Building renovation.
Measure E was a bond issue that local voters approved in 2004, for construction and renovation of college buildings and infrastructure at Modesto Junior College and Columbia College. The projects were selected using a multi-year, campus-wide evaluation of existing facilities and future projected program and enrollment growth. These projects were initially identified within the Yosemite Community College District Facilities Master Plan, were approved by voters in 2004, and have been given authorization by the Bond Citizens Oversight Committee and the YCCD Board of Trustees. The funding for these projects is entirely separate from the state funding for instruction, and thus is not affected by the current budget deficits the school is experiencing in other areas.
