There were several great stories or story lines in sports this last week and weekend. The Indianapolis Colts clinched the AFC South division title with their comeback win. Vince Young claimed glory, as he led the Tennessee Titans on a 18 play, 99 yard drive that ended with a 10 yard touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Kenny Britt, and deliver a devastating loss to the Arizona Cardinals (one that severely helped my San Francisco 49ers... but I digress). USC against UCLA almost turned into a royal rumble. The New Jersey Nets tied the NBA record for worst start to the season (0-17 currently), congratulations. But the most interesting story involved the world's number one golfer, his wife, an SUV, a fire hydrant and a tree.
At approximately 2:30 in the morning on Saturday, a 911 call came from a neighbor of Tiger Woods. He reported that Woods was unconscious at the side of his SUV. When police arrived and Woods was taken to the hospital, the scene was still a bit blurry, but some things were apparent. According to reports, Woods had gotten into his car, drove approximately 100 feet, and proceeded to crash into a fire hydrant and a neighbor’s tree. Interesting point: Woods was not traveling fast enough for his air bags to deploy. Police also reported that Woods’ wife, Elin, broke open the back windows of the SUV with a golf club in order to get in and help her husband. Only two days later now, and the National Enquirer is reporting Woods is having an affair with a New York nightclub hostess, who he was seen with in Australia during Woods' trip to play in the Australian Masters.
I have some problems with this. Not the slander, which in my opinion probably has no face value. Let's be real: it is in the Enquirer. But let's step away from examining this as a sports story, and investigate the facts. Why did Elin Woods break out the back window to get to her husband, who would be located in the driver seat? Let's start with what was Woods doing leaving at 2:30 in the morning. The only good thing that happens at two in the morning is...NOTHING. There are rumors of a domestic disturbance, which would explain why Woods was leaving. The problem is sorting through the bull hockey and finding out who the aggressor was that night, and it is beginning to look like Ms. Woods was that person. Think about it. An argument breaks out in the Woods home. As Tiger tries to leave, Elin goes buck crazy with a 9-iron on the back window of the SUV, causing Tiger to run over a fire hydrant, and into a tree. But then again, that's this reporter’s opinion. But Tiger does need to get the truth out, before the media craze continues to destroy his pristine public image.
